Molex Micro-Fit & Mini-Fit Connectors: High-Current Wire-to-Board Guide

> Engineering note: Per-circuit current is not a blanket connector-family value. It depends on the selected terminal, wire gauge, circuit count, temperature rise and application derating.

1. Why Micro-Fit and Mini-Fit Dominate Power Connections
When a wire-to-board connection needs more than the 2–3A of JST connectors, Molex power connectors are the default choice. Two series cover nearly all medium-power applications:
- Micro-Fit 3.0: 5–8.5A, compact 3.0mm pitch. The modern standard for PC peripherals, LED lighting, drones, and power tools.
- Mini-Fit Jr: 9–13A, larger 4.2mm pitch. The ATX standard — every desktop PC power supply uses Mini-Fit Jr for the 24-pin motherboard connector.
Key Features
| Feature | Benefit |
|---|---|
| Positive locking latch | Prevents accidental disconnect under vibration |
| Polarized housing | Impossible to insert backwards |
| TPA (Terminal Position Assurance) | Secondary lock confirms terminals are fully seated |
| Blind mate capable | Large guide features align during insertion |
| High-temp housing | Nylon 6/6 or LCP, UL94 V-0 |

| Current | 9A (18 AWG) up to 13A (16 AWG) |
| Circuits | 2–24 (2, 4, 6, 8, 20, 24 common) |
| Wire range | 16–24 AWG |
| Temperature | -40°C to +105°C |
| Mating cycles | 30 |
| Housing | Nylon 6/6, UL94 V-0 |
The 24-Pin ATX Connector
The main motherboard power connector is a 24-pin Mini-Fit Jr. It combines:
- 3.3V, 5V, 12V power rails
- Multiple ground returns
- Power-on and power-good signals
- Total power delivery: up to 480W (with 8-pin CPU supplementary)
Applications
| Application | Why Mini-Fit Jr |
|---|---|
| ATX power supply | Industry standard |
| Industrial equipment | High current + reliability |
| Power tools | 13A per circuit |
| Battery chargers | High charge current |
| Server power distribution | Proven in data centers |
4. TPA: Terminal Position Assurance
TPA is a secondary locking mechanism that confirms crimp terminals are fully seated before the connector can be mated:
“`
Terminal inserted → TPA clicks into place → TPA only engages if terminal fully seated → connector can mate
“`
If a terminal is not fully inserted, the TPA cannot lock, preventing mating. This eliminates the “terminal backed out” failure mode — the #1 assembly error in crimp connectors.
5. GSConn Molex-Compatible Power Connectors
| Series | Compatible | Pitch | Current | Circuits | Features |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| W2B-MF3 | Micro-Fit 3.0 | 3.0mm | 8A | 2–24 | TPA option, positive latch |
| W2B-MJ42 | Mini-Fit Jr | 4.2mm | 13A | 2–24 | TPA option, blind-mate guides |
| W2B-MG57 | Mega-Fit | 5.7mm | 26A | 2–12 | High current, panel mount |
All GSConn power connectors use phosphor bronze contacts with tin or gold plating, nylon 6/6 housing (LCP optional), and UL94 V-0 flammability rating.
When evaluating a GSConn or other alternative connector, compare the exact drawing and test evidence to the original Molex system. Validate the full housing/terminal/header set, cable assembly, current derating, mating geometry and qualification requirements before approving a substitute.
