Medical connector selection begins with the device risk analysis and intended use. Patient proximity, cleaning or sterilization method, mating frequency, touch safety, misconnection risk, fluid exposure, and traceability can matter more than pin count or package size.

1. Why Medical Connectors Are Different

Medical device connectors face requirements beyond any other industry:

Autoclaving is the harshest: 134°C steam under pressure for 20 minutes, repeated 1000+ times over device life. Standard PA66 and PBT fail — LCP or PEEK required.

4. Mating Cycles: The 100K Challenge

Over a 10-year device life, patient connectors must survive 30,000–60,000 cycles. Standard connectors rated 500 cycles fail within months. Medical-grade connectors need:
– Thick gold (3µ”+) or gold/palladium plating
– Reinforced contacts
– Lubricated contact surfaces


5. Design-Control Checklist

Document whether the connector is patient-accessible, the applied-part classification, required creepage/clearance, touch-proofing, keyed or color-coded misconnection controls, cleaning and sterilization cycles, fluid compatibility, expected mating cycles, strain relief, cable flex life, and supplier traceability. Validate the finished cable assembly and device—not only the connector component—under the applicable regulatory and risk-management process.

Biocompatibility, sterilization, and medical electrical safety are use- and material-specific. Supplier documentation supports the device file but does not by itself certify the finished medical device.
